Inside the Bugatti Chiron Factory: Where Masterpieces Are Born

We visited the Atelier in Molsheim, Alsace, to understand how the world's most extraordinary car is built. What we found was closer to art than engineering.
Molsheim is a small town in the Alsace region of northeastern France. Population: 9,000. It is quiet, ordered, and entirely unremarkable — except for the Bugatti Atelier, behind whose understated gates some of the most extraordinary machines in human history are assembled by hand.
We were invited to observe the construction of a Chiron Super Sport 300+ — one of 30 ever made, now available in the ManifestShopping collection.
**The Body**
Each Bugatti body is crafted entirely from carbon fibre, formed in autoclaves and finished by hand. The tolerances are measured in tenths of a millimetre. There is no automated assembly line. There are no robots performing the work that humans do better. There are artisans — highly trained specialists, some of whom have worked only on Bugattis for their entire careers.
The body takes roughly 400 hours to complete. The paint process alone — a minimum of seven layers, hand-polished between each — takes 20 hours.
**The Engine**
The 8.0-litre quad-turbocharged W16 engine is assembled in a separate, climate-controlled room within the Atelier. One person builds each engine, from first bolt to last seal. That person signs the engine. The engine is then run on a test bench for four hours before installation.
Four turbochargers. Ten radiators. 1,500 horsepower from an engine the size of two V8s placed at an angle.
**The Testing**
Before delivery, each Bugatti is driven extensively by the factory test driver on public roads in Alsace — the same roads Ettore Bugatti drove in 1909. The car must pass 26 specific test protocols. Only then is it released.
**The Delivery**
Your Chiron is delivered by a Bugatti Brand Ambassador, who drives it to your door. They spend two days with you, teaching you the car. This is not sales. This is custodianship.
